At approximately 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday March 14, 2007, an employee of cable contractor ‘Dhanam Cable & Powerline’ was involved in an accident while conducting construction work in Diego Martin. ‘Dhanam Cable & Powerline’ is contracted by Columbus Communications Trinidad Limited (Flow) to conduct upgrade and maintenance services on its network.
‘Dhanam’ employee, Mr. Premchand Ramnath, and his team were installing new fibre optic cable for Flow in the vicinity of Ridgewood Towers, Diego Martin, when the accident occurred. He was immediately taken to the Port of Spain General Hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Mr. John Reid, Flow’s President & Chief Operating Officer stated that “this accident is currently under investigation and we are awaiting an initial report to ascertain how the accident occurred”. Mr. Reid added, “we are deeply saddened by this unfortunate accident and we extend our deepest condolences to Mr. Ramnath’s family”.
UPDATE- Results of initial investigations into accident involving Flow cable contractor’
Port-of-Spain, Wednesday March 14, 2007: At approximately 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday March 14, 2007, Mr. Premchand Ramnath, an employee of cable contractor ‘Dhanam Cable & Powerline’ was involved in an accident while conducting construction work in Diego Martin. ‘Dhanam Cable & Powerline’ is contracted by Columbus Communications Trinidad Limited (Flow) to conduct upgrade and maintenance services on its network.
Unofficial reports indicate that the ladder on which cable contractor Mr. Ramnath worked came into contact with a low lying, unsecured T&TEC wire which was hanging in the communications space of the pole; this is the space allocated for non-electrical cables such as those used by Flow and TSTT. He was reportedly electrocuted and subsequently fell off the ladder. Mr. Ramnath was rushed to the Port of Spain General Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
Investigations are continuing and an autopsy is scheduled to be performed to confirm the actual cause of death.
